Nigeria’s Skyline: The Iconic Tallest Buildings in Nigeria 2023

Nigeria is home to some of Africa’s tallest buildings, with two of its most imposing structures currently being constructed in the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja. These buildings, Millennium Tower and WTC Abuja, are set to redefine Nigeria’s skyline and put the country on the map as a major player in the African construction industry.

However, there are a few controversies surrounding the measurement of these buildings. The first issue is whether the Necom House (Nitel Building) should be measured to its antenna, which is not an architectural feature but rather telecoms infrastructure. CTBUH (Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat) measures such non-architectural features in only one of the three categories it uses to measure tall buildings. The second issue is whether the Millennium Tower should even be classified as a building since less than 50% of its structural envelope is habitable.

According to the CTBUH’s Height Criteria, the height of a building is measured in three ways: height to the architectural top, height to occupied floor, and height to tip. The height to the architectural top excludes antennas, while the height to the tip includes all features, such as antennas and flagpoles.

In terms of height to architectural top, Millennium Tower stands at 160 meters, making it the tallest ongoing development in Abuja. However, it cannot be classified as a building due to its structural envelope’s lack of habitable space. On the other hand, the WTC1 in Abuja and the WTC2 in Abuja, both ongoing developments, stand at 158 meters and 150 meters, respectively.

In terms of height to occupied floor, WTC1 and WTC2 in Abuja take the top spots with 153 meters and 145 meters, respectively. The Union Bank Headquarters in Lagos follows at 115 meters.

Finally, in terms of height to tip, the Necom House in Lagos comes out on top at 160 meters. WTC1 in Abuja and WTC2 in Abuja follow closely behind at 158 meters and 150 meters, respectively.
